About Me & This Site
My Story: From Personal Questions to a Public Tool
Hi, I'm Alex! Like many people, I found myself fielding lots of questions when I started looking seriously into electric vehicles. Friends and family would ask: 'Is an EV really cheaper in the long run for someone like us?' or 'What about the environmental impact once you factor in making the battery?' That's how I understood how complex it was to take into account the multiples costs along a car's lifetime, and how big a difference there could be between countries. Finding clear, complete, accurate and up-to-date data was the first step, and arguably the most difficult, to reaching an answer.
Then I needed a way to do the math. My original spreadsheet soon turned out impossible to understand for anyone but me, so I build this online tool. My goal was to develop a calculator that uses reliable, location-specific data (like our local fuel/electricity prices and the carbon intensity of the French electricity grid) to show the actual financial and environmental picture based on individual driving habits.
As I shared it, I realized that many others likely had the same questions and could benefit from these calculations. That’s why I decided to make the tool publicly available. I don't represent any car manufacturer or energy company; I'm just someone who enjoys working with data and wanted to offer a helpful resource. I'm personally committed to maintaining this tool with the most accurate, up-to-date information I can reasonably access and to refining the calculations over time. My aim is simply to provide clear, unbiased numbers to help empower your decision-making process when considering an electric vehicle.
My Mission: Helping You Make Informed EV Decisions
My core mission with this site is to help drivers like you make data-driven decisions about electric vehicle ownership. With fuel costs being what they are and a growing awareness of our environmental responsibilities, many of us are considering the switch to electric. But determining if an EV is right for *your specific situation* can be complicated. This free online calculator is my attempt to provide that personalized analysis.
How The Calculator Works
IsAnEVRightForMe.com
analyzes two critical factors that I believe influence the EV decision:
Financial Analysis
I've designed it to calculate the total cost of ownership difference between electric and conventional vehicles based on:
- Your location's fuel and electricity prices
- Daily or annual driving distance
- Vehicle purchase costs (estimated)
- Maintenance expenses (estimated)
- Local currency values
Environmental Impact
The tool also provides clear metrics on the environmental benefits of switching to an electric vehicle:
- Reduction in driving emissions based on your local electricity grid's carbon intensity
- Carbon payback period (how long it takes for an EV's lower emissions to offset its estimated manufacturing footprint)
- Lifetime emissions comparison between vehicle options
For a more detailed explanation of how I approach these calculations, the data sources I use, and the assumptions made, please see the Methodology page.
Why Trust This Calculator? Data-Driven & Transparent
I'm committed to transparency and providing calculations you can understand. Unlike many simple online calculators, I've tried to make IsAnEVRightForMe.com
account for:
- Regional differences in energy costs and carbon intensity
- The option to compare keeping your current vehicle versus buying new
- Broad categories of vehicles and their general efficiency profiles
- Both financial and environmental factors in a single, personalized analysis
All calculations are based on regularly updated data from publicly available and reputable sources where possible. I detail my approach on the Methodology page.
Versions and Update History
I strive to keep the data as up-to-date and comprehensive as possible. Your feedback via the contact page is always welcome to help me improve the tool!
- 2025-03-18 : version 1.1 with pre-selected country URLs (like this for UK).
- 2025-03-17 : fully updated data for 35 countries.
- 2025-03-12 : version 1.0 including select countries.
